Helpful Hints & Tips!

Homemade Baby Wipes: 2 C of warm water; 2 T of baby wash/bath; 2 T baby oil; 1 roll of paper towels, cut in half, & seperated (optional); recycled wipe container (or if you don't want to seperate the towels, use a round container such as a lg yougurt container or butter bowl). Cut slit in lid of container( if not using the recycled wipe container). Place towels in container. Mix water, bath wash & baby oil. Pour over towels. Allow to soak in over night for best results.

Home Remedy for Bee & Wasp Stings: To ease the pain, mix a teaspoon of unseasoned meat tenderizer with a few drops of water te a paste then place this on the sting site. This will give almost instantaneous relief since an enzyme in the tenderizer dissolves the toxins that the insect has injected with its stinger. A similar application of baking soda is a good second choice. Remove the stinger carefully by lifting it up with a clean finger nail or a blad of some type then scraping gently.

A homemade mouthwash is simple to make. Use 1 t of salt and 1 t of baking soda in a 1/2 cup of water; rinse and gargle as needed. A drop of peppermint extract can be added for a minty taste.

To ensure white teeth an sweet breath, brush with this special mixture: 1 T baking soda; 1 T salt; 1 t lemon juice; 1 drop of peppermint oil. Mix all together and keep in an air tight container.

For coughs make a mixture of 1/2 t of honey; 1/12 t of lemon joice and a pinch of red pepper powder. Dissolve this slowly in the mouth. Take a sip as often as you need to get relief. The honey soothes the throat, the lemon juice cuts the phlegm and the red pepper heals the irritated membranes. You can also get relief from a cough by taking 1 t of honey and several drops of peppermint oi, mixing them together and taking as needed.

The double duty rubber band: To get a better grip on a stripped screw, trap one side of a wide rubber band between the screw driver and the screw head and twist.

Use travel bottles for your take-along beverages? Here is a safe way to clean and eliminate smells. Hand wash bottles, fill halfway with hot water and a squirt of dish soap. Put cap on and shake vigorously. Empty the water through the drinking spout or opening if it doesn’t have one. Rinse out with hot water, flushing the threads of the rim. Air dry. To eliminate smells, add 1 teaspoon of baking soda and ½ teaspoon of chlorine bleach to the bottle. Fill halfway with hot water, shake to mix, top with water and screw on cap. Let sit for 30 minutes or overnight. Empty, wash as directed above, rinse and dry. Scrub lid with tooth brush and baking soda. Rinse Well. Store your bottles open, with lids off, to avoid trapping odors.

1 regular size Dawn (original blue)
1 spray bottle ( 24oz)
Water

Pour dish soap into spray bottle, fill with water. Spray on wasps, takes a few minutes but it does work. Why this works: the soap coats the wasps body and wings; hindering flight and suffocating them.(wasps breath through their body). As you can see by these pictures, 1 bottle killed a large nest of red wasps!

I recently had a request for acne masks, here a just a few I found and remember, not every cause of acne is the same. You need to try different remedies & masks until you can find the one that works for you! (1) Baking Soda Mask: Mix a little baking soda & water in your hands after washing your face. Apply gently to your face/affected area. After you have coated the with the mixture, let sit for about 20 minutes. Rinse with warm water. You may have to use this treatment several times a week before you may see your acne disappear. (2) Egg White Mask: beat a couple of egg whites until nice & frothy. Apply it to your face using clean hands. Leave on for about 20 minutes. Rinse off with warm water. This will tighten your skin and clear up red spots. Do not use if allergic to eggs!! (3) Egg yolk mask: Whip 1 egg yolk and apply it to your skin with clean hands. Leave on for about 20 minutes. Rinse off with warm water. Egg yolks contain vitamin A which is very good for treatment of scarring. Do not use this method if you are allergic to eggs. Some discussions are being made about salmonella when using this type of mask. Please do a little research before hand if this is an issue that concerns you. (4) Oatmeal mask: Blend 1 package or 1/2 cup plain oatmeal with warm water. (just enough to make a paste) Gently spread on your face with clean hands. Allow to dry, 15+ minutes. Wash off with warm water. This mask is very gentle and safe for most users. (5) Sea Salt/table salt mask: Take about 2 tablespoons of salt and warm water, enough to make a paste and apply to skin with clean hands. Rinse with warm water. You can also wash your face (gently) with salt and water mixed. (6) Basil Acne tonic: 2-3 teaspoons of dried basil leaves. 1 cup of boiling water. Steep basil in water for 10-20 minutes. Allow to cool. Apply to face with cotton ball. (7) Blackhead removal: 1/2 cup of Fuller's earth. 1 teaspoon tinctue of benzoin. Distilled witch hazel. Combine all ingredients and stir thoroughly. Apply mask to your skin with clean hands. Allow the mask to dry and harden, 30-40 minutes. Soak a hand towel in warm water and place across your face. When the mask begins to soften, gently rub your face with the towel in a circular motion. Rinse well with warm water.

TOILET PAPER ROLL: FUN FOR KIDS, BUT A MESS FOR YOU

Recently, we stayed a weekend at my husband’s cousins home. We all had a wonderful time and grilled both nights. However, my 2 year old discovered the toilet paper roll (on your standard holder) in the guest bathroom. In seconds flat, the entire roll was heaped up in a pile on the floor. I patiently rolled the paper back, but even that wasn’t enough. The roll was bulky and difficult to use. I suddenly had a brain storm, why couldn’t you take a large empty tissue box to put the paper in? I tore off 4 sheets at a time and put them into the box, filling it full. I then place the box on top of the toilet (on the tank) for easier use. In our home, there is no standard toilet paper roll holder nor a convenient place for one. We purchased a roll holder that hangs the roll up side ways (see picture). This has deterred our toddler from rolling it out on the floor. However, he does know how to pull on it and drag it all over the house!

I haven’t purchased a stain “treater” in over 3 years. I LOVE this easy, inexpensive solution to stains, and believe me I see a LOT of stains! I have 5 kids age 11 and under, and my husband is determined to stay a kid forever!

I use approximately 1/3 parts Dawn Dishwashing Liquid to 2/3 Hydrogen Peroxide. That’s it. Combine and gently shake to mix. I keep mine in a squeezy ketchup bottle.

I use it to pre-treat stains, to re-treat stubborn stains that make it through more than one treatment, and to treat stains that I didn’t see the first time (which is most common, unfortunately).

Hydrogen peroxide is extremely cheap to purchase, and Dawn often goes on sale at Kroger in conjunction with P&G coupons. Sometimes I can get it for free! Plus, I use the Dawn for other uses – normal dishwashing, hand soap, and bathroom cleaner.
